10th GR: Columbian Exchange / Interchange / Encounter

Search tips

Each commodity has a page of resources, with selected database links at the top, books and ebooks below.  The books are listed roughly by the usefulness of the content related to the questions.   There are other sources not listed on the page but you should be able to complete the task using just the sources provided.

Try variations of your search terms.   Here are some example tips and strategies:

  • Search an "event" such as  "Columbian Exchange" or "Columbian Interchange" or "Columbian Encounter" - note the use of quotes
  • Look for alternate names of your commodity such as corn or maize,  cow, or cattle
  • Some resources focus on a geographic location such as specific countries, regions, or continents
  • Search a particular time period, by date or by a name such as "colonial"
  • Search single and plural versions of your search terms - it will make a difference in your results
  • Some search tools such as Accessit  use a "root word" / " begins with" search as a default.  Example: to get specific results type "tea" so that you don't get other words with the same root such a teacher
  • For cultural aspects search in histories of food, cookbooks, histories about specific groups of peoples/ particular cultures., etc.

Remember that the term "Columbian Exchange" was coined in 1972 by Alfred Crosby, so it will not yield good search results for relevant publications before that date.

When searching the Library catalog it is recommended to use quotations around your term.

For example: "tea" or "corn"  to avoid other search terms that begin with the same root such as teacher or cornucopia
